Today’s home improvement adventure brought a roller coaster of emotions – the frustration of missed bargains mixed with the joy of scoring a fantastic deal! Let’s take a peek into the DIY journey.
The Deal Dilemma: Missing Out and Scoring Big
The day started with a trip to Ovalworld in Blackburn, my go-to spot for all things wallpaper and borders. On the agenda: more wallpaper, additional borders, and a tub of border adhesive. Here’s where the “woe” part comes in – last week, I snagged five rolls of border for a mere £1 each! Lo and behold, the same borders were on a “Manager’s Special” this week, at an unbelievable 20 pence each! Talk about buyer’s remorse! However, the silver lining – I managed to grab three more rolls at this incredible price.
Patterned Perfection: Bringing the Walls to Life
Moving on to the fun part – the wallpaper! I went for the “Graham and Brown Superfresco Colours” range, with the “Splendor Red/Cream” pattern. This stunning design, priced at £10.99 per roll, adds a touch of vibrant elegance to the space.
Hanging Paper, Borders, and the Art of Patience
With the wallpaper hung and a couple of border lengths in place, the rest of the day was dedicated to prep work. Filling in holes, meticulously sanding corners, and varnishing edging strips were all on the agenda.
Door Drama: A Quarter-Inch Makes a Difference
Doors can be tricky, especially when they don’t quite meet the floor. To address this, I decided to shave off a quarter-inch from the bottom of the door. After planing and rehanging the door, a seamless connection with the floor was achieved.
The Finishing Touches: Veneer and Patience
While the border installation is on hold until the wallpaper dries completely, another task has been added to the project list – covering the fireplace with walnut veneer. This promises to add a touch of warmth and sophistication to the room.
Keeping Track of the Costs: Every Penny Counts
As with any renovation project, keeping track of expenses is crucial. Here’s today’s breakdown:
- Patterned Wallpaper (2 rolls): £10.99 each (total £21.98)
- Five rolls of border (£1.00 each): £5.00
- Three rolls of border (20p each): £0.60
- One tub of border paste: £2.50
Today’s total expenditure comes to £30.08, bringing the running total for the project to £225.58.
While the missed border bargain stings a little, the overall progress and the upcoming addition of the walnut veneer leave me excited about the transformation taking place. Stay tuned for further updates on this journey of DIY delights (and the occasional shopping mishap)!
