Barcelona have reportedly inquired over the possibility of signing Liverpool’s most reliable defender Virgil van Dijk.
The dutch captain is touted as the finest centre back in world football and he proved his pedigree by helping Liverpool reach yet another Champions League final and this time won it.
Van Dijk has now reached two Champions League final since joining Liverpool 18 months ago from Southampton for £75m.
That incredible display has alerted Barcelona who meet his agent- Neil Fewings of the Wasserman Media Group to discuss about bringing him to Camp Nou.
But unfortunately the deal collapsed for two reasons:
1. Van Dijk wants to become the second defender to win the Ballon d’Or after Fabio Cannavaro-
Van Dijk is the hot favourite to win this year’s Ballon d’Or after leading Liverpool to the Champions League trophy and Holland to the Nationals League final.
His main competitors were Lionel Messi and Mohamed Salah who played remarkably well with their respective clubs but failed woefully with their respective nations.
Messi is on the verge of been banned for two years for lashing out on South America organizing body CONMEBOL who he accuses of corruption.
While Mohamed Salah and Egypt where dumped out of the AFCON by the tournaments whooping boys- South Africa.
2. Van Dijk is getting better and better with Liverpool
The dutch defender might be regarded as he world best centre back but Van Dijk still needs to improve his game and what better way to do it than with Jurgen Klopp and his coaching staff.
Van Dijk also needs to face the best attackers {Sadio Mane, Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino} to stop the rest from getting past him..
No one has dribbled past Van Dijk in the last 64 games but strangely only one has succeeded in training.
Fabinho revealed that Firmino is the only player who to have succeeded in disposing Van Dijk while dribbling past him in training but only once.
That again has exposed Van Dijk’s weakness and helped him improved in that area.
