Stephen Flynn is the new leader of the SNP in Westminster

Following Ian Blackford’s resignation as SNP leader in Westminster, Stephen Flynn was chosen in his place.

Alison Thewlis, a South Aberdeen MP who is close to First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, lost the MP vote by a margin of 17 to 26.

Last Monday, Blackford announced his retirement amid rumours that Flynn may succeed him.

Wednesday’s Prime Minister’s Questions will feature a meeting between Mr. Flynn and Rishi Sunak.

He has previously said that Mhairi Black will serve as his deputy.

The only candidate to succeed Blackford, who is also regarded as a close friend of Sturgeon, was initially thought to be Flynn, 34.

After sources close to Mr. Flynn were cited in the media as saying that he was looking to replace the majority of the party front team in the Commons, Ms. Thewliss unexpectedly entered the race.

Additionally, it has been suggested that he might recast the lead role for Joanna Cherry, Ms. Sturgeon’s outspoken detractor.

SNP MPs will be “relentlessly focused on defending the interests of Scotland and our democratic right to decide our future in an independence referendum,” according to Mr. Flynn, who will serve as their leader.

He stated: “Tory families in Scotland are paying a devastating price to deregulate Westminster as a result of Brexit, the austerity measures, and the cost of living crisis.”

“SNP MPs will work harder than ever to hold the Conservative government to account and say that independence is a necessary step to security, justice, and prosperity for Scotland,” the SNP stated in a statement.

Ms. Sturgeon tweeted that she was looking forward to working with both Mr. Flynn and Ms. Black, calling them a “truly formidable team.”

With 44 MPs, the SNP is currently the third-largest party in the Commons.
