nIf you recognize thesensong lyrics, then you know the work of Farrokh Bulsara, born on thisndate in 1946 in the Sultanate of Zanzibar.

n

n
n

n

nBut you probably don’tnknow the name Farrokh Bulsara! n

n

n
n

n

nInstead, we know him bynhis stage name: Freddie Mercury.

n

n
n

n

nZanzibar was located innAfrica (it’s now part of Tanzania) and was a British protectorate.nMercury grew up in Zanzibar and another British colony, India, whichnis where his parents were from. The family practiced the Zoroastriannreligion, which is an ancient Persian religion. Mercury himselfnpracticed the piano. A lot! As a teenager, he could listen to a songnon the radio and then replicate it on the piano. While going tonschool in India, Mercury started a band, adopted the name “Freddie,”nand played his favorite sort of music: rock and roll.

n
n

n

nIn 1964, Zanzibarnunderwent a revolution, and many Arab and Indian people were killed.nThe Bulsara family fled for their safety and relocated to England.nMercury went to college in London and earned a diploma in art andngraphic design; he then joined a series of bands while holding downntwo part time jobs.

n

n
n

n

nWhen Mercury joinednforces with a guitarist and drummer from a band called Smile, henchanged his last name from Bulsara to Mercury, and he named his newnband Queen.

Mercury used his art skills to create this logo.

n

nThe band ended up being anhuge success, with number one hits and international recognition. Bynthe early 1980s, Queen was one of the biggest bands in the world, nknown as a stadium rock band because concerts were held in largenarenas and sports stadiums.

n

n

n

nSome of Queen’s songs include “We WillnRock You,” “We Are the Champions,” “Bohemian Rhapsody,” andn“Another One Bites the Dust.” These songs have been used innmovies and ads and sporting events.

n

n

n

nQueen is one of the mostnbootlegged bands ever, and the Guinness Book of World Records claimednin 2005 that the band spent more time on the UK Album Charts than anynother musical act. (More than the Beatles? Wow.) Their Greatest Hitsnalbum was the all-time best-selling album in UK Chart history.nFinally, their performance at 1985’s Live Aid is regarded by some asnone of the greatest performances in rock history.

n

n
n

n

nUnfortunately, FreddienMercury died of AIDS in 1991, cutting short a great musical career.
