nToday is the Equinox – the time of year when the day and night are equal in length. In the Southern Hemisphere, it’s the beginning of spring, and in the Northern Hemisphere, it’s the beginning of autumn.

For ancient Celts and Druids, the Equinox was a powerful time for magic.

nAlban Elved means “The Light of the Water.” The beginning of autumn was seen as the waning of the Goddess and of growing power for the dark-and-dangerous God. (Of course, in spring they celebrated the rebirth of the Goddess.)

nThis was a time of the second harvest. A time of shoring up food supplies for the winter. A time of seeking balance in one’s life, like there was – briefly – balance in day-and-night.

nBut we don’t know much about the ancient rituals associated with this holiday, so people who are intrigued by Celticism and Druidism and Paganism are free to dream up their own personal holiday traditions.
