September 20 – Punch Day

n

n

n

nThenword punchnmay come from the Hindustani word panch, nwhich means “five.” n

n

n
n

n

nNow,nI immediately thought of the kind of punch that is a hit with a fist, nand I thought, uhnhuh, five fingers closed up make a fist…nBut, it turns out, THAT sort of punch comes from the Old French wordnponchonner, nto jab, prick, or stamp, which comes from the word ponchon, nwhich is a pointed tool. That makes a lot more sense than connectingnthe hitting kind of punch with something that means five.

n

n
n

n

nThenkind of punch we are talking about today is the kind of punch youndrink at a party. What does a party drink have to do with “five”?nyou ask. Well, there traditionally were five ingredients in punch:nwater, fruit, alcohol, sugar, and tea or spices.

n

n
n

n

nButnetymologists aren’t sure that this explanation for the word punchnreally… uh… holds water. (See what I did there?) Instead, somensuggest that the word comes from the word puncheon, nwhich is a barrel or cask for liquor. n

n

n
n

n

nWhatever.nAll I know is that MY party punch has completely differentningredients (and is super pretty and delicious!):

n

n
n

n

n 1ngallon orange juice

n

n ½ncarton raspberry sherbet

n

n 1nliter 7-up or Sprite

n

n

n

n
n

n

nPournthe orange juice into a punch bowl. Fill the top of the punch bowlnwith small scoops of sherbet. Pour the 7-up onto the sherbet so thatnit foams up.

n

n
n

n

nInvary this punch with different juices, different flavors of sherbet, nand sometimes ginger ale or cream soda. It’s pretty hard to beatnthese sorts of punches in loveliness or yumminess!

n

n
n

n

nButnthere are so many gorgeous, fun, and scrumptious kinds of punch.nCheck out these recipes!n Be sure to notice that there are some crazy Halloween punches amongnthem!

n

n
n

n

nHerenare some great ideas: n

n

n
n

n

nForna Frozen-themednparty, use Blue Hawaiian Punch, Sprite, and vanilla ice cream.

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

n

nForna luau, combine lemonade with pineapple juice, perhaps some tropicalnnectars, and ginger ale.

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

n

nFornHalloween, get two sizes of punch bowls – mix up some punch in thensmaller bowl, and put dry ice in the larger bowl. Cool, huh?

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

n

nAnChristmas punch could start with cran-raspberry juice, vanilla icencream, and Sprite, for the red-and-white colors. Make it even morenfestive by coating the rim of your glasses with sugar – just dipneach glass into a bowl with a small amount of cool water and thenninto another bowl with the same amount of sugar.
