Get in touch with your inner pirate and celebrate this international holiday. ‘Tis easy, just growl “Arr” and “Yarr” a lot, and throw in an occasional “Shiver me timbers!”

This day be started by some Yanks (aye, these original buccaneers are from the U.S.!) long ago in a decade almost lost in th’ mists o’ time (the 1990s). ‘Twas started as a rare joke b’tween friends, but a man name o’ Dave Barry, who be writin’ a humor column for the landlubbers, wrote about the day and smartly spread the day ’round th’ globe.

According to the founder, Bobby Henderson, “…[I]t is disrespectful to teach [FSM] beliefs without wearing His chosen outfit, which of course is full pirate regalia…. You may be interested to know that global warming, earthquakes, hurricanes, and other natural disasters are a direct effect of the shrinking numbers of Pirates since the 1800s.” Henderson has created a graph showing that there is a “statistically significant inverse relationship between pirates and global temperature.”
