Born in what is nownGermany on this date in 1098, Hildegard of Bingen was a writer, anmusic composer, a philosopher, and an abbess (the head nun) in thenBenedictine Church. And she is considered the founder of scientificnnatural history in Germany!

nShenpreached sermons. She authored three large volumes on theology (thenstudy of religion). She wrote the oldest surviving morality play andnone of the largest bodies of letters that has survived from thenMiddle Ages. She wrote textbooks on botany and medicine.

nAnwoman who publicly preached in the Middle Ages was unusual enough –nbut for Hildegard to be a respected theologian, writer, and medicalnexpert was really unheard of!
