nWhatna debut! Scooby-Doo, Where Are You! made its debut on thisndate in 1969.

n
nAnd the cartoon series went on to lead to more series, nreruns, and revivals, movies, videos, puppet shows, Lego shorts, nvideo games, stage plays, and even comic books!! And don’t forgetnmerchandising: lunch boxes, a board game, coloring books, underwear, nand on and on.

n

nInn2013, TV Guide rated Scooby Doo as the fifth greatest TV cartoon ofnall time.

n

n
n

n

nWhat’snso good about a Saturday-morning cartoon with four teenagers and antalking Great Dane?

n

n
n

n

nWell….therenwere mysteries to solve. There were monsters to search for and spookynsupernatural-seeming stuff to explore. There were humorous missteps.nAnd antics. And the occasional shenanigan, an even a few romps intontom-foolery!

n

n
n

n

nInmissed all of that – I have literally never seen a single episodenor movie of Scooby-Doo – but I have heard some great things aboutnthe series. My hero, the dearly departed scientist andnscience-explainer Carl Sagan, admired the series’s skeptical stancenand even wished that an adult show with a similar bent would be angreat public service. n

n

n

n

nYounmay wonder what Sagan meant by “skeptical stance.” Apparently, nwhenever there seemed to be a ghost haunting a town or annot-of-this-world monster terrorizing the countryside, the gang wouldneventually track down the ghost or monster – and it would alwaysnturn out to be a criminal playing tricks in order to make off withnsome loot or some scoundrel in a mask trying to frighten people fornhis own nefarious purposes.

n

n
n

n

nAfternbeing unmasked by the kid detectives, the criminal would often saynsomething like, “I would’ve gotten away with it if it wasn’t fornyou meddling kids!!”

n

n
n

n

nApparently, nhowever, at least one of the newer Scooby-Doo retreads has a totallyndifferent – and disappointing – feel. Scooby-Doo on ZombienIsland is a betrayal to the original show and in fact is justnlike most TV shows that deal with so-called paranormal activity: itnends up with the idea that supernatural creatures like ghosts, nzombies, and werewolves do exist. One reviewer asked, “Scooby-Doo, how could you?”

n

n

n

n(Inread that Scooby-Doo! Mystery Incorporated gets back to its skepticalnroots – hooray!)

n

n

n

nTrynwatching an episode or two of Scooby-Doo. Here is one – andnyou can find links to many more on that page!
