Saoirse Ronan is a unique figure at the Academy Awards. She has been nominated four times but has yet to win an Oscar. The talented American-born Irish actress received her first nomination at just 13 years old for her role in Atonement. Since then, she has been nominated three more times for her performances in Brooklyn, Lady Bird, and Little Women.
Now, at 30, Ronan is poised to compete in both the lead and supporting actress categories at the 2025 Oscars. She is in the running for her roles in The Outrun and Steve McQueen’s Blitz. If nominated, she could become the youngest actor to receive five or even six nominations.
The Outrun, directed by Nora Fingscheidt, is based on the life of writer Amy Liptrot. The film tells the story of a Scottish woman battling alcoholism in busy London. To regain her sobriety, she returns to her home in Orkney. Ronan shared her excitement about the project, saying, “Nora really wanted us to have our input in terms of who these characters were.”
This film marks Ronan’s first experience as a producer. She learned a lot about the behind-the-scenes work in filmmaking. “There’s a lot going on that actors don’t see,” she explained. “It made me appreciate the craft even more.”
The film also stars Paapa Essiedu as her boyfriend, Daynin. Ronan’s character, Rona, reconnects with nature while battling her past. The cast found sea swimming in remote locations therapeutic. They filmed on Papa Westray, a small island with only 90 residents. The experience was intimate, as they stayed in local homes and shared meals together.
The Outrun is currently in cinemas, showcasing Ronan’s incredible talent and dedication.
