Alongside with its flagship devices, Samsung has also released something interesting. The company unveiled the DeX. This is a device that will be able to turn users’ Galaxy S8 and S8+ phones into a desktop PC.
Key Points
It seems that the dream of a phone-PC convergence is finally here. As we know, several manufacturers have tried to build a device like this, but they have failed.
Well, will Samsung manage to pull it off? Let’s find out.
DeX is short from the “desktop experience” and it represents a new way on how people can hook up their phones to a monitor, keyboard and mouse, and the phones will be transformed into a full-screen, Android-powered PC.
We must say that after spending some time on it, customers will figure out they should opt for something like this instead of an inexpensive laptop of desktop.
In order to transform their S8 phones into a desktop, they must buy the DeX dock. Unfortunately, Samsung didn’t release the date or price for the device yet, but rumors are claiming that this dock will be available at the price of 150 dollars.
As for design, we must say that this dock looks similar to a cupholder, featuring a top that slides back to create a cradle for people’s phones. Customers will have to put their phones onto the dock’s USB-C port and connect their peripherals.
Another great thing is that people will be able to use Bluetooth or plug the mouse and keyboard into the dock’s two USB-A 2.0 ports. Moreover, this dock also homes a 1080 HDMI port and an Ethernet port.
Unfortunately, people will not be able to plug in headphones, because the dock hides the headphone jack on the phone. But, users will be able to take calls either with the speakerphone while the phone is in the dock or by using Bluetooth headphones.
It is not necessarily to use this dock exclusively with Samsung monitor and keyboard. Customers will be able to use it with any band they want. This means that they just have to pop the phone in, and a very desktop-like experience will appear.
So, let’s talk about what people will see on the monitor. Well, some of people’s apps and icons down the left side of the screen, a large number of settings will appear in the status bar, and there is also a start menu for people’s app tray.
Another great thing is that people will be able to pin apps to the taskbar. We must say that most of the company’s own apps, Microsoft apps, Adobe app, and Google apps, work great in desktop mode. These apps will open in resizable, desktop-style windows.
So, in the end, is the new DeX worth the extra money?
Well, we must say that this dock really works. The new DeX is pushing the portability to a whole new level.
Users will be able to transform their smartphone into a desktop PC whenever they see a monitor and a keyboard.
