IIkay Gundogan was close to ditching Manchester City for Liverpool after watching them lift the Champions League last season, reports the Athletic.
Gundogan has won it all at club level—15 trophies—but he wants to win the biggest one—the Champions League—before he retires.
The Athletic reports that City’s coaching staff were worried Gundogan would swap Manchester City for Liverpool after reports emerged that he spoke with Jurgen Klopp to congratulate him for winning the Champions League and kept in touch with him throughout the summer.
Gundogan was open to joining Liverpool, but Klopp didn’t keep spending millions on signing the midfielder, who, as he said, ‘can’t be improved anymore to fit into what he wants’.
With Liverpool’s move failing to materialize, Gundogan will now extend his contract with Manchester City.
