Rashtra Niti is above Raj Niti: PM Modi thanks all parties for their support to GST

Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday said that โ€˜rashtranitiโ€™ (national policy) is above rajniti (politics) while expressing gratitude to all parties for support on GST.

โ€˜GST, A NEW MOTI IN ONE-INDIA MAALAโ€™

Underlining that the development marks the recognition of โ€˜One Indiaโ€™ and strengthens this concept, he said, โ€œWe are aligning ourselves with new taxation regime. GST is a new โ€˜motiโ€™ (bead) in this โ€˜maalaโ€™ (necklace).โ€

Modi coined the GST in a new manner โ€“ โ€˜Great Step by Team Indiaโ€™, โ€˜Great Step towards Transformationโ€™, โ€˜Great Step towards Transparencyโ€™.

In this context, he quipped, โ€œjanam koi de, lalan palan koi kare. Krishna ko janam kisne diya, bada kisne kiya? (Someone may give birth, but someone else may nurture. Who gave birth to Lord Krishna and who brought him up?)โ€.

Narendra Modi expressed gratitude to all parties for their support for GST Bill and said that the bill was a crucial step towards ending tax terrorism.

Modi described GST as a crucial step towards ending tax terrorism besides reducing corruption and black money and said the new regime of indirect taxation will make consumer the king.

The Lok Sabha unanimously passed a constitution amendment bill that enables mega reform Goods and Services Tax bill (GST). The bill will now be sent to state assemblies for approval after the President approves it.

โ€œโ€˜Rashtra Nitiโ€™ (national policy) is above โ€˜Raj Nitiโ€™ (politics). I thank all political parties, as well as state governments run by different parties. We have reached here after churning in Lok Sabha, Rajya Sabha, 29 states, their representatives and 90 parties. We are putting a stamp on the final decision,โ€ Modi said.

EVERYBODYโ€™S VICTORY

Modi emphasised in Lok Sabha that the passage of the GST Constitution Amendment Bill by Parliament was not a victory of any party or government but was everybodyโ€™s victory as it highlighted the success of the democratic ethos of the country. Intervening in a debate on Constitution (122nd Amendment) Bill, he asserted that the GST will benefit mainly those states which are considered backward and address the problem of imbalanced development.

Union Finance Minister Arun Jaitley made a strong pitch for โ€˜one nation one tax,โ€™ stating that Indiaโ€™s biggest tax reform will see the centre and states โ€˜pooling their sovereignty to reap the many benefits that will ultimately lead to Indiaโ€™s progressโ€™.

โ€œTax evasion will lessen, there will be no tax on tax or a cascade of taxes and ease of doing business will improve,โ€ said Jaitley.

Modi acknowledged that manufacturing states will suffer losses but they will be compensated. August 8 marks a crucial step towards freedom from tax terrorism, Modi said, while recalling that this was the day in 1942 when Mahatma Gandhi had sounded the bugle of โ€˜Quit Indiaโ€™ which marked a major step towards the countryโ€™s Independence.

โ€œIt will also help reduce the problem of black money and lead to generation of jobs by benefitting the small traders and entrepreneurs,โ€ he added.
