nTodaynis the anniversary of a horrific assassination attempt.
n
n
n
nWhennMalala Yousafzai was just 11 years old, she started writing a blog, nusing a pseudonym (or fake name) to protect her identity.
n
n
n
nWhyndid she need protection?
n
n
n
nYoungnMalala was describing her life under the repressive Taliban, anterrorist group that was trying to control the region of Pakistannwhere she lived. At times the Taliban had banned girls from attendingnschool. Malala didn’t just talk about what was happening in herncorner of the world, she gave her own views about those events, andnabout the importance of education for girls.
n
n
n
nAaanndnthe Taliban wasn’t happy about that. Especially when people began tonpay attention to the blog. There was a movie, interviews in print andnon TV, even a prize nomination.

nOn this date in 2012, when Yousafzai was 15 years old, an assassin shotnher –in the face! – while she road on her school bus.
n
n
n
nWenare all so grateful that she somehow survived!
n
n
n
nYousafzainwas taken to England for rehabilitation. Although many in the Muslimnworld condemned the attempt on her life, the Taliban repeated threatsnthat they would kill Yousafzai and her father. n
n
n
n
nThennews of the child assassination attempt became big news all over thenworld, and some said that Yousafzai became the most famous teenagernin the world. Because of her work towards children’s rights, nparticularly girls’ rights, some real changes happened in Pakistan –nwith its first Right to Education Bill now in place – and morenefforts towards education rights and girls’ rights have startednaround the world.

n
n
n
n
n
nMalalanYousafzai has gotten some amazing honors and awards, most notably then2015 Nobel Peach Prize. At age 17, she was the youngest to have evernearned this prestigious prize!
n
n
n
nYousafzainis now 19 years old. She continues to be a student and an activist.nShe writes and speaks. There was a U.N. Event called Malala Day, andnthere is a non-profit organization called Malala Fund; the latter hasnfunded the opening of a school near the Syrian border, especially fornSyrian refugees.
