October 30 – Anniversary of the Declaration of the Slovak Nation

n

nWhennI was growing up, I was asked to memorize names and locations ofncountries. I am pretty sure the teachers talked as if those countriesnhad existed for centuries and centuries, and would still exist forncenturies and centuries more.

n

n
n

n

nAtnleast, I certainly got the impression that the nation list I wasnmemorizing had existed as long as humans had existed, and that itnwould continue to be accurate so long as humans lived, as well.

n

n
n

n

n

n

nOfncourse, I couldn’t have been more wrong!

n

n
n

n

nOnenof the Eastern European nations I memorized was Czechoslovakia. Butnthat nation only existed within a single century: the 20thnCentury. To be specific, Czechoslovakia existed from October, 1918 tonDecember, 1992

n

n
n

n

nItnwas on this date in 1918 that the Slovaks officially joinednCzechoslovakia.

n

n
n

n

nHerenare some other names that represent what the Slovak people were anpart of, through different eras of history: Samo’s Empire, thenPrincipality of Nitra, the Kingdom of Hungary and then thenAustro-Hungarian Empire…

n

n

n

nAnd of course, Czechoslovakia, and now Slovakia.

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

n

nSlovakianhas as a nation is high-income; it has one of the fastest economic growthnrates in the E.U. (European Union).

n

n
n

n

nCoolncastles and chateaux and caves!

n

n

n

    n

  • n Slovakian has more castles and chateaux, per capita, than any other nation inn the world!

    n

  • n

n

n

n

n
n

n

nSo,nwhat does that mean? I presume you know that castles are buildingsn(or groups of buildings) that are fortified with thick walls, nbattlements, towers, and often a moat. n

n

n
n

n

n

n
n

n

n

n
n

n

nManynchateaux are castles, too – chateau is the French word forncastle! But some chateaux are manor houses or palaces that donnot have fortifications.

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

n

nAndnper capita means “per person.”

n

n
n

n

nForna nation of only five million people to have 180 castles and 425nchateaux is pretty surprising!

n

n
n

n

    n

  • n Slovakian also has a shockingly high number of caves: about 6,000!
