nTodaynis a national holiday for yet another of those Caribbean islandnnations that it’s so hard to keep track of!

n

n
n

n

nThisnone has a long name for a small country, because it is made up of ansmall island called St. Vincent and a bunch of smaller isles thatnmake up about two-thirds of the Grenadine islands! (The rest of thenGrenadine islands make up the nation of Grenada.) Adding all thenislands together, this nation is maybe one-sixth of the smallestnstate in the United States, Rhode Island.

n

n

nAtnany rate, on this date in 1979, St. Vincent and the Grenadines becamenindependent of the United Kingdom!

n

n

nDidnyou know that the Caribbean Sea is named for one of the main groupsnof native people who were living on the islands when the Spaniardsndiscovered them in 1492? The Caribs also lived in northern SouthnAmerica in a region now part of Venezuela.

nThenCaribbean is famous for piracy…as you probably know from the wholenDisney “Pirates of the Caribbean” thing. Why do you suppose therenwas so much piracy in that region from 1650 to 1720? I’m thinkingnthat there were so many islands, many of them controlled byndifferent, warring groups of native and European peoples, that it wasneasy to (for example) hide Spanish pirates that attacked Englishnships, and vice versa. With thousands of islands and even uninhabitednislets, it would be really hard to police all the harbors andncoastlines in order to arrest the pirates and get back their booty!
