October 25 – Thanksgiving Day in Grenada

nTonme, this is a tricky one:

n

n

n

nThisnpublic holiday commemorates the day that the U.S. and Caribbeannmilitary forces did a military intervention in Grenada.

n

n

n

nYouncould say it was an invasion. You could say that it was a liberation.

n

n

n

nAtnthe time, the U.N., Britain, and Canada criticized theninvasion/whatever-you-want-to-call-it. It was called by some an“flagrant violation of international law.”

n

n

n

nAndnyet, many people in Grenada welcomed the invaders/liberators, andnseveral officials of Grenada and other Caribbean nations requestednthe intervention, and the nation apparently really does celebrate thenanniversary!

n

n

n

nThenbackground is complex, and I do not intend to do the history justicen– instead, I will simplistically say that an elected government wasntaken over by communists in a coup, that no elections were held andnno adversarial political parties were allowed for four years, andnthat that communist government was taken over in another coup by evennmore hardline communist forces. After the second coup, severalngovernment officials were executed, and the island was put undernmartial law.

n

n

n

nWhennU.S. and Caribbean Regional Security System forces invaded, on thisndate in 1983, the former democratic constitution was put into placenagain. The U.S. troops withdrew less than two months after thenintervention, and soon elections were held. n

n

n

n

nAhhh! Beautiful!

n

n

n

nGrenadanis a great tourist spot. Its capital, St. George’s, is seen by somenas the most beautiful port town in the entire Caribbean. Grenada alsonhas some wonderful beaches, great dive spots, amazing waterfalls, andnof course – what Grenada is known for – a surprisingly largenposition in the world spice market for such a small island! n
