October 25 – St. Crispin's Day

nPostednon October 25, 2013

n

n

nIt’snnot just St. Crispin’s Day, it’s the feast day of his twin brother,nSt. Crispinian, too.

n

n

n

nButnsaying “St. Crispin’s and St. Crispinian’s Day” is a mouthful, nand the Catholic church booted the day out of official status, nanyway, pointing out that there is little evidence that these twinsneven existed. So people just shorten it to “St. Crispin’s Day.”nWhen they bother to mention it at all.

n

n

n

nCrispinnand Crispinian were said to be cobblers—that is, shoemakers.nBecause of this, they act as patron saints of cobblers, tanners, andnother leather workers.

n

n

n

n

n

n

St. Crispin probably didn’t make shoes
that looked like this!!

n

nShoes,nglorious shoes!

n

n

n

nIsnit crazy that some people spend more than four thousand dollars on anpair of name-brand shoes? n

n

n

n

nWell…Inhave never been rich, but I have to say that it seems to me a littlenbit crazy! If you have that much money, maybe you should spend ancouple of hundred dollars on a pair of really nice shoes—and thenndonate the leftover thousands of dollars to a charity that providesnshoes to kids who have none!

n

n

n

nButnit probably is not crazy that the average adult in America spendsn$200 to $300 per year on shoes. Our feet are really important, andnbad-fitting shoes can cause problems. Also, different activities inndifferent weather conditions require different sorts of footwear. Ifnyou buy quality shoes made out of quality materials, they last a longntime but are fairly expensive—and, let’s face it, if you don’t buynquality shoes, then you have to replace your shoes quite often! Whichnis also quite expensive!

n

n

n

nHerenare some of my favorite shoe innovations:

n

n

n

    n

  • nForn toddlers, shoes that squeak!n You can keep track of your little kid, and the squeak rewards propern walking (heel to toe). Of course, the squeakers can be removed whenn quiet is needed!

    n

  • n

n

    n

  • nVelcro shoesn – wonderful for little kids and quick off-and-on action!

    n

  • n

n

    n

  • nDIYn “Sharpie shoes,”n plain white canvas shoes personalized with Sharpie markers.

    n

    n

    n

  • n

  • Cottagen industry shoes. It’s nice that we can still support small andn handmade “industries” like Babu Shoes

n

nAndnthen there are some things I’m not so crazy about. Like super-dupernhigh spike heels just seem dangerous to me. High heeled “balletnslippers” have to harmful to your feet, as do really narrow-toesnshoes. Walking around with little aquaria in your heel…isnjust…nuts! n
