Although Ali promised tontake steps to make his country more democratic than it had beennbefore he took power, he used his police force against his politicalnopponents.

nInnlate 2010, protests broke out in Tunisia, in the capital city ofnTunis, and the result was a revolution! After a month of intensenprotests and civil resistance, Ben Ali stepped down on January 14,n2011, and almost a year later one of the dissidents, a human rightsnactivist, was elected president.
