nHurricanenSandy smashed into the East Coast of the U.S. last week and impactednmillions of people. I know that my daughter—who was one of thenlucky, safe ones—could hardly bear to look at all the devastationnas she drove through New York and New Jersey, eking out the lastnlittle bit of gas in the gas tank until she and her husband reachednPennsylvania, where gasoline and electrical power still exist.n(Whew!)

ABCnand Disney are designating today as a day of giving to the victims ofnthis super-storm. They urge you to call the American Red Cross atn1-800-HELP-NOW or to donate online at www.redcross.org/abc.nYou can also text ABC to 90999 to give a $10 donation to the RednCross.

nIfnyou live in New York or New Jersey, you may be able to temporarilynhouse people whose homes are uninhabitable (no long livable). Withnthe cold temperatures setting in, it’s even more important that thenthousands whose homes are damaged or without power get help. Familiesnwho need help are urged to go to local disaster sites. n

nScientistsngive the first hurricane of the year a name that starts with A, thensecond a name that starts with B, and so on, all through the year.nThere are six different name lists for Atlantic hurricanes, and theynalternate each year. However, if a particular hurricane does a lot ofndamage, that name is retired forever from hurricane name lists, andnit has to be replaced by another name that starts with the samenletter. That means that, from now on, no other tropical storm ornhurricane will be named Sandy.
