nShirleynChisholm took a bold step: she threw her hat in the biggest ringnthere is in the United States.
n
n
n
nChisholmnbecame the first African American person to ever make a bid for anmajor party’s presidential nomination. Also, she was the first womannto ever run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
n
n
n
nInremember her candidacy. I was young, idealistic, and so excited to bena part of history. In the primary elections, my state (California)nended up giving her the largest number of votes of any other state.nStill, she ended up fourth among all the Democratic presidentialnhopefuls. n
n
n
n
nIngather that she didn’t really expect to win the nomination—and shendidn’t—but she ran to demonstrate “sheer will” and hern“refusal to accept the status quo.”
n
n
n
nAfternthe nomination of Senator George McGovern was certain, candidatenHubert Humphrey made a symbolic gesture and released all of his blackndelegates to Chisholm. Those delegates, along with all the delegatesnshe won during the primary season, made Chisholm the fourth-rankingncandidate in the Democratic Party. Not bad, considering the fact thatnshe faced impossible odds!
n
n
n
nBynthe way, I talked so much about Chisholm’s brave, memorable, andnmeaningful presidential run, I neglected to say what she ran for annwon:
n
n
n
nInn1968, Shirley Chisholm became the first African-American woman evernelected to Congress! She represented New York in the House ofnRepresentatives. n

nShen was born in Brooklyn, New York. Her parents were immigrants fromn Caribbean island nations. Chisholm spent about seven years in n Barbados attending a strict elementary school, and for the rest ofn her life she had a slight “West Indian” accent.

nBeforen she became a politician, Chisholm was an educator.
