nTodaynis Culture Day in Japan.

n

n

n

nIt’sna day to promote the arts: music, painting, drama, dance, literature!nIt’s a day to contemplate or enjoy other aspects of culture, as welln– good food, traditional clothing, religious practices.

n

n

n

nIt’s also a daynto reward those who have succeeded in the worlds of art, science, ornscholarship.

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nApparently, nthere are art exhibits, cultural festivals, parades, and awardnceremonies.

n

n

n

n

n

n

n

nItnwasn’t always Culture Day…

n

n

n

n n

n

nOnnthis date in the late 1800s and early 1900s, starting in 1868, thenpeople of Japan celebrated the birthday of the Meiji emperor.nHowever, in 1912 the emperor died, and the nation got a new rulernwith a different birthday; the holiday called “the Emperor’snBirthday” was celebrated on that other date.

n

n

n

nThenMeiji emperor was considered so great, however, that his birthday wasnrestored as a new holiday in 1927.

n

n

n

nWorldnWar II was a time of horrible deeds and horrific losses. When the warnwas finally over, the post-war constitution was announced on thisndate in 1946. In 1948, the holiday celebrating the Meiji emperor wasnended, and Culture Day was begun.
