nDidnyou know that there is a group that was established to decide whatnwas good art, what was bad art, and even what was dangerous art?
n
n
n
nWhatnart historians call the French Academy was founded in 1648 as thenRoyal Academy of Painting and Sculpture. It was joined with the Musicnand Architecture Academies in the late 1700s to form the FrenchnAcademy of Fine Arts.
n
n
n
nThensort of standards set by the academy were supposed to protect Frenchnculture from “corruption” – and all I can say to that isn“yikes!”

n
nNow,nwhy am I talking about the French Academy on a post about an Americannartist born in Denmark?
n
n
n
nFirst, nlet’s get one thing straight – Albert Henry Krehbiel was born innthe city / town of Denmark, in Iowa, United States! (Hence callingnhim an American.)
n
n
n
nSecond,nKrehbiel was educated as a realist painter in Paris and became thenmost decorated American painter ever at the French Academy! He wonnthe Prix De Rome, four Gold Medals, and five cash prizes. So…wow!
n
n
n
nBornnon this date in 1873, Krehbiel’s art went from realism tonimpressionism to modernism / synchromism. Let’s look at what thesenterms mean:
n
n
n
n REALISMn– an art movement that attempts to represent people, places, andnthings truthfully…an attempt to paint what is real. It was a revoltnagainst magical and miraculous subject matter and against emotionalnexaggerations.
n

nHere is an example of Krehbiel’s realist paintings:

n
n IMPRESSIONISMn– an art movement that attempts to depict an impression of thenmoment – to capture a feeling or an experience. It is characterizednby relatively small, thin, visible brush strokes or even dots ofnpaint. Rather than accurately reproducing a person, place, or thing, nimpressionism seeks to accurately depict changing qualities of light.

n
n MODERNISMn– an art movement that for the most part ignored art traditions innan effort to explore new ways of seeing. Modern art tends to benexperimental, with fresh ideas about materials and subject matter, nwith new answers to the age-old question “What is art?”
n
n
n
nMostnmodern art is abstract or at least toying with abstraction. n

n SYNCHROMISMn– this modern art movement related color to music. This movement was thenfirst abstract paintings in American art.
