Hari Pahlawan, the Indonesian name for today’s holiday, can be translated as Heroes Day or as Warriors Day. It is a remembrance day held on the anniversary of the 1945 Battle of Surabaya, which became the national symbol of Indonesian resistance against colonialism.
Indonesia was finally recognized by the Dutch (aka the Netherlands) as an independent nation in 1949.
Celebration of Hari Pahlawan includes flying the flag at half-mast, a country-wide time of silence at 8:15 in the morning, a procession, and battle re-enactments. Some of these events may be modified this year because of the pandemic.
Indonesia has a lot of varied and beautiful scenery!
