Pyongyang, (North korea) According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK) launched its first tactical nuclear attack submarine on Wednesday, ahead of the country’s 75th founding anniversary.
According to the report, the No. 841 submarine, the first of its kind, was transferred to a submarine squadron affiliated with the Korean People’s Army Navy’s East Sea Fleet and renamed “Hero Kim Kun Ok” by the country’s ruling Workers’ Party of Korea (WPK).
Kim Kun Ok is regarded as a hero as the commanding officer of the country’s first generation naval force, according to the report.
The newly-built submarine will serve as “one of the core underwater offensive means” of the DPRK navy force, said Kim Jong Un, the WPK’s general secretary and the DPRK’s president of State Affairs, at the launching ceremony on Wednesday.
The DPRK’s top leader boarded the submarine a day after the launch ceremony and learned about its weapon system and underwater operation capability during an inspection, according to the KCNA.
Kim also requested that the transfer of surface and undersea nuclear-armed vessels to the navy be expedited.
