A member of the public slowed the Nice attack by jumping into the truck’s cab and wrestling the driver, according to police sources.
The unnamed man is said to have climbed into the truck when it hit an obstruction, before entering the cab
and wrestling with the driver.
The suspected attacker, named as 31-year-old Mohamed Lahouaiej Bouhlel, managed to fire several shots at police officers and the man, non of which connected, before he was shot dead by two officers.
Police sources confirmed the attack may have lasted longer if it was not for the actions of the man, reports the Independent
Eyewitness Eric Ciotti told radio station Europe 1 that he saw someone jump in the cab and help kill the man.
He added. ‘A person jumped on to the truck to try to stop it.’
So far 84 people have been confirmed dead following the Bastille Day attack, which saw a lorry driven through a crowd for 2 kilometres, and 50 others are critically injured.
Some 10 children were amongst the victims, with names of those who lost their lives starting to filter through.
A Scottish couple, Ross and Carole Annie Cowan, who were believed to be in Nice at the time have since been declared safe.
Foreign secretary Boris Johnson said one Briton was believed to be injured in the attack but that has not yet been confirmed by the Foreign Office
Speaking after the attack, President Francois Hollande said it was of ‘an undeniable terrorist nature’ and denounced the ‘monstrous’ killing of innocent people.
Tributes have been pouring in from leaders across the world condemning the ‘brutal’ attack.
PM Theresa May called the terror attack ‘horrifying’ and said Britain must now redouble its efforts to defeat ‘brutal’ terrorist ‘murderers’ following the attack in Nice.
