My Essays on Ten Science Fiction Film Classics

Friends, as you’ve probably noticed, This Island Rod has been on downtime recently because I’ve been working very hard on a series of essays on great science fiction films, a series that’s been published at Ferdy on Films and at the estimable site Wonders in the Dark, as the latter site had instituted a countdown of the top 100 science fiction films of all time as voted by many contributors to the site. I wrote ten entries for this series altogether and here are links to all, in the order of their place on the countdown:

Metropolis (Fritz Lang)
Solaris (Andrei Tarkovsky)

Alien (Ridley Scott)

Bride of Frankenstein (James Whale)

2046 (Wong Kar-Wai)

A Trip to the Moon (Georges Méliès)

The War of the Worlds (Byron Haskin)

Zardoz (John Boorman)

The Time Machine (George Pal)

Jurassic Park (Steven Spielberg)
And for good measure, Marilyn Ferdinand’s piece on The Incredible Shrinking Man for the series. And don’t forget to visit Wonders in the Dark and check out the 89 other excellent pieces by an extraordinary survey of film writing talents, including some work by the late, great Allan Fish.
