Jacob’s Well in Wimberley, Texas is one of the most dangerous and unsafe places to dive on Earth. Eight deaths have been reported of divers exploring the well’s mysterious depths. Yet regardless of its horrific past, Jacob’s Well remains a popular summer destination for families, it being the largest yearly spring in the Texas Hill Country.
Jacob’s Well is a large perennial spring (4 meters in diamter) it flows out of the most extensive underwater cave system.Diver will reach a massive 40 meters in depth. Authorities are strict with divers interested in exploring the well. But that doesn’t stop thrill-seekers from taking the plunge.
Jacob’s Well is frequently referred to be one of the world’s most dangerous diving locations since there have been scuba diving fatalities there. Two teenage Texans drowned in one of the well’s caverns in 1979 after being trapped there. One of their corpses was removed from the well in 1981, while the other was not found there until a recovery attempt in 2000.
Because the tunnels in Jacob’s Well get so small, divers must take their tanks off, which is a difficulty. Diego Adame, a 21-year-old from San Antonio, lost a flipper while free diving the tunnels deep in the well in July 2015 and had to cut away his weight belt to make it up to the surface before his breath ran out, describing it as a life-threating event. There is also the sheer depth of the cave.
Jacob’s Well may be perilous even from above. Despite having only a 12 foot circumference and being surrounded by rock, many people jump in headfirst. Those who are in the rising current may flip, etc. Swimming is permitted, but only between the hours of 10 a.m. and 6 p.m., and at your own risk. Reservations are required and are limited to two hours.
