nMahammednShahabuddin is classic example of Jungle Raj in the Lalu era. He first enterednthe Bihar Legislative Assembly in 1990 the year when Lalu had become the ChiefnMinister of Bihar. He again won the seat in 1995. After this, he decided tonfight the Lok Sabha Election and won consecutive four terms – from 1996 ton2004. The end of Lalu era in Bihar also ended his political career. Recently, he was granted bail by the Patna High Court because of inefficiency of Nitish Kumar. Later, the Supreme Court of India cancelled the bail and asked the Bihar Government to send him again to the Jail.

nIn 2004 LoknSabha election, nine supporters of Om Prakash Yadav, a JDU candidate andncurrent BJP MP of Siwan, was brutally killed. Recently, a noted journalistnnamed Rajdev Yadav was killed in Siwan on the order of Shahabuddin. No one isntaking interest in that case. But, the most horrific incident was the killing ofnthree brothers – two of them were killed in 2004 and the third one who was thensole eye witness was killed just three days before he was going record hisneyewitness account of the murder of his brothers. The killing of eyewitnessnensured Shahabuddin freedom. It should be noted that two of the brothers werenburnt alive by acid in 2004.

nShahabuddin wasnborn in 1967 in Pratapur village of Siwan district. He became a criminalnduring college days and started a reign of terror in Siwan. At that time, Siwannwas a political strong hold of Communists and Shahabuddin was opposing them.nHe fought 1990 Assembly election from Jiradei as an independent and won the seat. He soon joined Janta Dal and became the right hand of Lalu Prasad in Northern Bihar.

nDuring Lalundays, Shahabuddin had started to run a parallel administration in Siwan. No onencould dare to oppose him. He had full backing of Lalu Prasad Yadav. Even localnshop keepers were asked to put a photo of him in the shop as a token ofnadmission of his supremacy.

nShahabuddin isnmarried to Henna Shahab. The couple has a son, named Osama. Shahabuddin changednhis son’s name to Osama after he heard about Osama Bin Laden.

nOsama isncurrently pursuing Law from Noida. He was named as the prime suspect in thenkilling of Rajiv – the eldest son of Chanda Babu. Unfortunately, police couldn’tntouch him because now even Nitish Kumar is supporting Shahabuddin.

nShahabuddin usednto beat police men openly during Lalu raj. Even IPS officers couldn’t dare tonsay anything not likened by him. In 2001, Siwan police went to execute thenarrest warrant of Shahabuddin aide and district RJD President Manoj KumarnPappu. Seeing this, the RJD supporters beat policemen brutally. It was a blotnfor the district police. Further, Shahabudedin slapped the police inspector amids hundreds of people. Bachchu Singh Meena, the IPS Officer who was sent tonSiwan just few days back heard this news and decided to take some action. He regroupednthe district police and took help from UP police also and went to the villagenof Shahabuddin. A severe gun battle happened in which two police men werenkilled.

nEight of dreaded Shahabuddin supporters/criminals were also killed in this gun battle. Thenintention of police to kill Shahabuddin couldn’t materialize because somehownLalu managed to save him. Many AK- 47 and other sophisticated weapons were seized.

nLots of policencases were filed against Shahabuddin after this firefight. Bachchu Singh Meenanwas immediately transferred by Lalu, but by then he had done the damage tonShahabuddin. Few years later, another IPS officer Ratna Sanjay did the finalnblow to Shahabuddin. He along with Siwan DM C. K. Anil ensured that the birth place of the first President of India, Shri Rajendra Prasad, became free from the terror reign of Shahabuddin.

nRatna Sanjay andnC. K. Anil were also punished, this time by Nitish Kumar, for their actionnagainst Shahabuddin. Though, it should be mentioned that Nitish Kumar took oath as the CM in November, 2005 and Shahabuddin was arrested in December. Since then, he was in jail.

nThe biggestndamage for the reputation of Shahabuddin came from Sudhir Kumar Singh, a Bihar Police Officer whonwas posted in Siwan as a Dyputy Superitendent of Police.

nSudhir Kumar triednto help Chanda Babu and convinced him to fight for the justice of his two sonsnbrutally killed by Shahabuddin. Shudhir even stayed at Chanda Babu home for fewndays so that he can feel secure.

nSoon, SudhirnKumar got a chance to act against Shahabuddin, who was in Siwan jail at thatntime. He was also an MP and was jailed because IPS Officer Ratna Sanjay hadnfound lots of evidences against him. Shahabuddin was creating ruckus in thenSiwan jail and there was a report that he was threatening an inmate.

Sudhir went tonthe jail and brought Shahabuddin in the field so that all inmates can see whatnis going to happen with him. Before so many inmates – majority of themncriminals and supporters of Shahabuddin – he beat the MP brutally.nShahabuddin was not even able to walk after getting his due from hands ofnSudhir Kumar Singh. He got slipped disc problem and a court had to benestablished in the Siwan jail for his cases – for speed trial.n

nThe recent chilling murder of Hindustan reporter Rajdev Yadav is seen as the return of Jungle Raj, at least in Siwan. Rajdev was murdered just because he had leaked a picture of a Nitish Kumar minister visiting the jail. In the picture, you can see the facilities provided to such a dreaded criminal by Nitish Kumar government.

nTaking a look at caste equation, the majority of people killed by Shahabuddin are Yadav. However, in Bihar, Yadav feel aggrieved only when something happened or said to Lalu and his family. Other Yadavs don’t matter for the community. Rajdev murder can be seen as an example.

nEver since coming out of the jail, Shahabuddin is attacking Nitish Kumar. In fact, he has made a mockery of the Nitish Kumar and his administration. There seems to be some rift developing in the Grand Alliance because of this issue. Further, a video shot has shown Mohammad Kaif, a dreaded criminal and sharp shooter, is seen with Shahabuddin. It should be noted that Md. Kaif is wanted in the murder of journalist Rajdev (Yadav) Ranjan.

nThis saga of Mohammad Kaif has further embarrassed Nitish Kumar when an image was leaked on Tweeter where this murderer is seen with none other than Tej Pratap Yadav, the son of Lalu Prasad and currently Health Minister to the Government of Bihar.
