May 6 – No Homework Day

nInread that this is supposed to be a day when kids, teens, and evennuniversity students can say, “I’m not doing my homework today.”

n

n

n

n n

n

nIfnyou think about it, EVERY day students can say that – but then theynhave to face consequences for not doing assigned homework.

n

n

n

nI doubtnthat a teacher who would assign homework on No Homework Day would accept then“holiday” as a valid excuse…

n

n
n

n

nSo…consequences!

n

n
n

n

nI’dnlike to point out that, in education today, there are a lot of adultsntalking about homework as a Bad Thing. There are books such as ThenCase Against Homework (Kalish and Bennett), The Homework Mythn(Kohn), and The End of Homework (Kralovec). n

n

n
n

n

n

n

n

n

n(Andnthat’s in addition to all the parents and teachers who think thatnkids would be better off with no assignments, period – no homeworknand no classwork, either. They urge people to either follow SudburynValley schools or unschooling, and allow kids to learn withoutnassignments, tests, required courses, etc., etc.!)

n

n
n

n

nWhatnis the case against homework?

n

n
n

n

n(Thesenare generalizations, of course – and they pertain to the U.S.npublic school system. Specifics will vary depending on the place innthe nation or the world.)

    n

  • nKidsn get too much homework, too early. Compared to students in the past,n younger students (ages 6 to 8) are doing about twice as muchn homework; increases among kids ages 9 to 12 are smaller. A recent study published in The American Journal of Family Therapyn found that kids are getting, in some cases, three times as muchn homework as is recommended.

    n

  • n

n

    n

  • nManyn people say that the six or so hours of school are enough formaln academics; what kids need more than several more hours of academicsn is time to play, sleep, be physically active, and interact withn friends and family. Kids in America tend to be sleep-deprivedn andn under-active.

    n

  • n

n

    n

  • nItn may surprise you to discover that researchn shows that kids (especially those younger than high school age)n largely do not benefit academically from homework. Heren is a “Fact Sheet” about homework.

    n

  • n

n

n
n

n

nSo,ninstead of just saying, “I’m not doing my homework” for one day, nmaybe you should use the day to start a dialogue with parents andnteachers and the community at large about making No-Homework DaynEVERY day! n
