nInlive in Southern California, and we have been struggling withndrought, so I probably won’t be watering any flowers today. Butnhopefully wherever you live, you have plenty of water and can nurturensome beautiful May flowers and go all the way into June with loads ofnblooms!

n

n
n

n

nYounprobably already know that flowers are a plant’s reproductive organs, nright? The beautiful colors, showy petals, sweet scent, and deliciousnnectar are all there to lure creatures from flower to flower, npollinating Flower X with the pollen from Flowers Y and Z, so thatnthe fertilized flowers can make seeds that will grow into new plants.

n

n
n

n

nMostnflowers, like this hibiscus flower, have “male” parts, likenstamens that create pollen, AND female parts, like the pistil withnovaries and a stigma.

n

n
n

n

n

n

n

n

nSomenplants have separate flowers that have only male reproductive organs, nand other flowers that have only female reproductive organs, all onnthe same tree or bush. An example is an alder tree. n

n

n

n

n

n

n
n

n
n

n

nStillnother plants have male flowers only on one bush or tree and femalenflowers only on another bush or tree. That is the case with mostnholly plants. n

n

n

n

n

Holly male flowers, above, and female
flowers, below, are found on different plants.
