nGrowingnup in Southern California, I have always known about Cinco de Mayo,nwhich translates to “Five of May”: the Mexican celebration of annunlikely victory against the French in 1862. Cinco de Mayo is anpopular holiday in some portions of the U.S., and not just amongnMexican American people!

nButnI’ve never heard of Dos de Mayo (“Two of May”).
n

n
nThisnholiday is also a historical anniversary of a battle against Frenchntroops. This time, it was in 1808. This time, it was in the city ofnMadrid, Spain. n
n

n
n
n
n
n
nThenpeople of Madrid rebelled against the French troops occupying theirncity – and the rebellion was brutally crushed. Hundreds andnhundreds of Spaniards died by much better armed French soldiers.
n

n
nAndnthen the French moved to avenge their own losses by killing all thosenarrested in the uprising and all those possessing weapons!
n
n
n
nThenFrench leaders apparently thought that their swift repression of thenSpaniards would help them maintain control of the country – butnactually, it just made Spaniards angrier, and there were rebellionsnin various parts of the country. So started the Peninsular War.
