nWhennBritish troops and the Royal Navy left Malta on this day in 1979, itnwas finally fully independent for the first time in thousands ofnyears! This island nation is positioned in the Mediterranean Seanbetween Sicily and Italy and Africa. Of course, that location is thenreason the island were taken over by empire after empire, fromnPhoenicians and Greeks to Romans and Arabs, from Normans and HapsburgnSpain to French and British navies. n

nSurroundednby the sea, with mild winters and warm summers, Malta is quitennaturally a hot spot for tourists, and there are three times morentourists each year than there are residents. Film production in thennation is a growing part of the economy, and shipping and limestone nare other pieces of the economic pie. As you can imagine, with sonmany empires struggling to control Malta, there are some amazingnhistoric sites, including the Megalithic Temples, which are some ofnthe oldest free-standing structures in the entire world.
