nGrisnwas born and raised in Madrid, Spain’s capital, and he studiednmechanical drawing in Madrid as well. In 1906 Gris moved to Paris andnbecame friends with some other artists, including Henri Matisse. Henlived in the same building (described as a “gloomy heap”) asnPicasso; Gris apparently thought of Picasso as something of a teacher, I guess maybe in the inspirational sense, but Picassonis said to have been irritated with Gris.
