nApparentlyninspired by the Alien Abduction Festival held in Toronto, Canada, inn2008, Alien Abduction Day can be celebrated by watching movies ornreading fiction. So far, nobody has celebrated by actually taking anride on a flying saucer!

n
n
n(Darn!)
n
n
n
nAnfun festival!
n
n
n
n
n
n
nIngather that the festival goers did a whole lot of crafting. There wasnan “Alien Birthing Room,” a “Spacecraft Crafting” workshop, an“Tin Foil Hat Tailoring” station and fashion show, and of coursensome “Extraterrestrial Eats and Grooves.”

nThenserious side of alien abduction…
n
n
n
n
n
nHundredsnof people believe that they have been abducted by aliens, and theynreport memory gaps that shouldn’t exist, in some cases, and memoriesnof being paralyzed and surrounded by creatures and bright lights, innother cases.
n
n
n
n
n
nHowever, nnot one of these “experiencers” has even a shred of physicalnevidence to back their claims, and in most cases their storiesnactually contradict the evidence available.
n
n
n
n
n
nSonwhat is going on? Are all these people nuts? Liars? Fame-mongers?
n
n
n
n
n
nApparently, nthe few scientists who have studied cases have found that most peoplenwho claim to have been abducted by aliens are not mentally ill, andnthey are not lying in order to cash in on their claim. Instead, thenexperiencers (people who claim to have been abducted by aliens) seemnto experience sleep paralysis, a particular sort of hallucinations,nand/or false memory syndrome.
n
n
n
n
n
nThenlong and the short of it is that most people who make these claimsngenuinely believe that they really experienced what they arenclaiming—but that doesn’t mean that they actually did!
n
n
nLet’snget back to the fun again!

nWatchn a movie or read a story about aliens. For movies, you might try oldn classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kindn orn Cocoon,n or you might watch something newer like Guardians of the Galaxyn or Galaxy Quest.

nForn books, the Tripodn seriesn by John Christopher (starting with The White Mountains)n is pretty intense, Even Aliens Need Snacksn by Matthew McElligott is silly, and my own book The Survivorn has an interesting alien connection.
