The Republic of Texas was
larger than the current state
of Texas.

n“Whenna government has ceased tonprotect the lives, liberty and propertyofnthe peopleWe,ntherefore…do hereby resolvenand declare…that the people ofnTexas do now constitute a free, Sovereign, nand independent republic…”

nOnnthis day, proud Texans celebrate this day in 1836, when Texas adoptednthe Texas Declaration of Independence and broke away from Mexico, ncreating the Republic of Texas. This independent nation existed fornten years before Texas joined the United States of America.

n

nDuringnthose ten years, Texas had a Congress with 14 senators and 29nrepresentatives, a president, and a court system—all roughly copiednfrom the U.S. system. I got to wondering if the nation had its ownnmoney, and I found out that some stores passed out paper money goodnonly in that store, some Texan cities printed their own money—goodnin that city only—and the Republic of Texas printed money, too. Butnthe Texan money could only be used to pay taxes—it was pretty muchnworthless inside and outside the nation! Also, Texas didn’t producenany coins.
