nOnnFebruary 19, 1803, U.S. President Thomas Jefferson signed a law thatnhad earlier passed both houses of Congress. The bill approved thenboundaries and constitution of the 17th state, Ohio.

nButnalmost a decade later, when Louisiana was formally admitted as then18th state, the congressional bill included an officialndate of statehood. n

nWhichnis something that Ohio didn’t get.

nAfternLouisiana, all other states admitted to the nation got an officialndate of statehood from Congress. Waaaayyyy later, in 1953, ancongressman realized that Ohio was never officially admitted to thenunion and, therefore, didn’t have an official statehood date. Henproposed a bill to fix this—a bill that would formally admit Ohionas of March 1, 1803.

n(I’mnnot sure why the congressman didn’t ask that statehood be retroactivento February 19, 1803. That would be the logical date to choose!)

nHalfna century later, on this date in 1867, Nebraska became the 37thnstate.
