MANCHESTER — Louis van Gaal has been sacked as manager of Manchester United, numerous British media reported on Monday (May 23).
According to the Daily Mail, the Dutchman had arrived at United’s Aon Training Complex at around 8.45am local time (4.45pm, Singapore time), followed later by a lawyer who works with the League Managers’ Association (LMA).
The lawyer, David Gilroy, is said to be an employment barrister who had previously represented David Moyes when he was sacked as the Manchester United manager nearly two years ago.
Three members of van Gaal’s staff, Albert Stuivenberg, his assistant, Frank Hoek, his goalkeeping coach, and Max Reckers, one of the club’s performance analysts, have also lost their jobs, according to The Independent.
The news of van Gaal’s sacking come just two days after Manchester United lifted the FA Cup for a record-equalling 12th time. An official confirmation from the club is expected at around 12pm local time (8pm, Singapore time).
Former Chelsea and Real Madrid manager Jose Mourinho has been widely tipped to replace the Dutchman, according to reports in the British media.
Mourinho’s appointment is expected to be announced on Tuesday after the 53-year-old Portuguese meets with senior United officials, reports the BBC.
