Mads Mikkelsen Talks Doctor Strange Humour And Rogue One Reshoots

Doctor Strange star Mads Mikkelsen recently had an interview with DigitalSpy where he was asked a few things about the film, from the scale of it to its humour. He also talked about Rogue One and whether or not he was involved in the reshoots, and if he was a fan as a child of Star Wars.

Here’s the Doctor Strange section:

How did [Men and Chicken] compare with working on Doctor Strange?

They’re hard to compare. [] is a small group of friends who are making a small-budget film – well, actually it’s not that small a budget, but compared to the American films it’s obviously nothing. We are a tight little group, we will discuss it in the evening, talk about what we’ve done, what we’re facing tomorrow, are we on the right track.

That is not the same way we work in America of course, the director has a billion things to see to, but we try to make it the same, try to sit down, discuss the scenes before we shoot them, we try to make it a smaller room than it is in reality and make the scenes be like any other scene – forget about the big spaceships, forget about the 500 people walking around you, try to make it intimate.

How do you find working with CGI?

CGI is not a new thing for me, I’ve done it in a few movies. This one was not too bad, the CGI was not in direct interaction with me in my scenes, it was more like the backdrops, the landscapes would be slightly different sometimes, but I didn’t have to interact with it. But I’ve done that before in Clash of the Titans when we were fighting giant monsters. They were obviously not in the film and I was fighting tennis balls, and that I’d say is real acting!

Will you get to bring any of the black humour from Men and Chicken to Doctor Strange?

You can’t bring it yourself, if it’s in the script you have to sort of lean into the script that’s already there. There is some. My character is not necessarily carrying too much of it but Doctor Strange is. there’s a certain darkness in the Doc and a sense of humour in there, absolutely.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artefacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

The cast includes Benedict Cumberbatch, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams and Michael Stuhlberge with Mads Mikkelsen and Tilda Swinton. Marvel’s Doctor Strange is directed by Scott Derrickson and produced by Kevin Feige with Louis D’Esposito, Victoria Alonso, Charles Newirth, Stephen Broussard and Stan Lee as executive producer.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange is released November 4, 2016

Here’s the section on Rogue One:

Have you been involved in the reshoots on Rogue One?

Yes I have, and they will be done soon I guess, so yes in a few days.

Did that mess up your schedule at all, since you presumably weren’t expecting them?

No, it’s kind of normal. In all the big-production films I’ve done so far, they have always called me back for little reshoots, it might be something that they want to change, the way we did it was wrong, or it might be something that they wanted to add so it’s kind of a normal process on big films, they’re covering all their bases.

Were you a fan of the Star Wars movies when you were younger?

I am now, but no, I did not grow up with it, I grew up with Bruce Lee and stuff like that. I never watched the Star Wars films and I never watched the James Bond films, so I caught up on that later in my life, and what a treat I was in for.

How was working with Gareth Edwards on Rogue One?

Wonderful, he made it quite easy for us to feel like we are in a real film in a real situation and forgetting about all the circumstances, all the monsters, all the spaceships, all the planets, so he was a real actors’ man for us.

Rogue One, which takes place before the events of ‘Star Wars: A New Hope,’ tells the story of unlikely heroes who have united to steal plans to the dreaded Death Star.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story comes out December 16, 2016.
