The longest single-span covered bridge in the United States

Bridgeport, CA

Bridgeport is the site of a beautiful, 233-foot covered bridge that is the longest single-span covered bridge in the United States. It was erected in 1862 by David Isaac John Wood at the site of Nye’s Crossing (named after Urias and Manuel Nye, who built a trading post at the location in 1849). The name was subsequently changed to Wood’s Crossing and then to Bridgeport. The bridge formed part of the Virginia Turnpike toll road and was used by those headed to the northern mines and to the Comstock Lode in Nevada.
