While day one of Lollapalooza was not without its share of controversy, it all was washed away — quite literally — when the festival was forced to shut down early due to inclement weather. Within a matter of minutes the festival went from warning attendees that rain was on the way, saying “We are expecting storms within the next 20 minutes. Be prepared for light to moderate rain” on Twitter.
To telling them the show was over and it was time to go, just an hour later, tweeting “Tonight’s performances will not resume. Please make your way toward shelter, away from Grant Park.”
As you can see, the storm cells headed towards Grant Park were massive, and with all of the issues the rain could cause, including muddy crowds and dangerous amounts of water hurling towards tons of electrical equipment, the festival was left without much choice.
Even in subpar conditions, performers like Lorde were trying to gut out great performances, before ultimately being shut down.
Lorde herself took to Twitter to apologize to attendees and promise to return to the area for another show soon. “They’ve told us we can’t play,” she said in a tweet. “I had the most spectacular show planned for you and i PROMISE i will come back to play it as soon as i can,” she finished with before adding a broken heart emoji.
