La Llorona: The Real Legend and Origins

It is said that since European settlers arrived in the Americas, many people believed that something sinister roamed their rivers. The sound of what seemed to be a wailing woman would be heard drifting up from the water’s edge. Since at least the turn of the twentieth century, the figure at the centre of this legend has been called “la llorona”, which means “the weeping woman” in Spanish.
