Jurgen Klopp has bruised aside the notion that he needs to find replacements for Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane in case of injury and fatigue.
Klopp do not want the club to splash millions on signing players whereas those at the club can equally do the jobs of those two. He feels the likes of Xherdan Shaqiri and the fit again Oxlade Chamberlian, Adam Lallana and Naby Keita can all play in that role.
Vindicating himself for refusing to spend heavily this summer, Klopp said:
“You should never do transfers because other clubs are doing transfers. That makes no sense, it’s not about that”, Klopp told Sky Sports.
“And if you sit back for a second and have a look at the squad, do we need more players? people will say, yes, we need a substitute for Sadio Mane, for Mohamed Salah, whatever. But those players are here. So, do you get a one-for-one replacement?”
Liverpool have spent just $2.5m in signing out of their $300m war chest this summer. They signed Seep Berg, Harvey Elliot {free} and Adrain {free}.
“A big signing? People think that players from other clubs, other countries, are better than the players we have here but without really having the proof, because those players haven’t played here, or whatever.
“It’s just that what is new is seen as more exciting. It’s like with a new car. Your old car is completely reliable, but you want a new one and two weeks later it breaks down. It looks better, but obviously it’s not that good”.
Liverpool will open the new season on Friday by playing Norwich City at Anfield.
