nSpainnis organized quite differently than the United States is. Spain isndivided into provinces – but there are also those autonomousncommunities (which are also either provinces or divided intonprovinces). Altogether, Spain AND its autonomous communities arendivided into 50 provinces.

nThenautonomous communities were created in 1978; the “autonomous”npart means that these regions are guaranteed self-rule. That meansnthat Spain is much more decentralized than a nation like the UnitednStates. The autonomous communities still have to honor the limits ofnthe Spanish constitution, but they are much more independent than,nsay, California.

nHowever,nsince 1986, Spain has been a member of the European Union. The EUnhas both economic and political agreements.
