June 5 – President's Day in Equatorial Guinea

nPostednon June 5, 2016

n

n

nThencurrent president of Equatorial Guinea is TeodoronObiang Nguema Mbasogo, nand he was born on this date in 1942.

n

n
n

n

nThat’snwhy today is celebrated as President’s Day. I suppose that, whennthere is another president, the holiday will be moved to her or hisnbirthday?!

n

n
n

n

nInnthe United States, we celebrate President’s Day on a day near thenbirthdays of two of our greatest presidents – GeorgenWashington and Abraham Lincoln. Most of us do not celebrate thenbirthday of our “sitting president.”

n

n

n

n

n

nBut our presidents don’tntend to serve very long – generally only four to eight years –nwhereas Obiang has served as president of Equatorial Guinea for a longntime:

n

n
n

n

nHe’s been president ever sincenhe ousted his uncle in a military coup in 1979!

n
n

n That’sn37 years!

n

n
n

n

nObiangnis considered the longest-serving leader in Africa and thenlongest-serving president in the world!

n

n
n

n

nYounmay be wondering what makes this guy, who took over originally bynthrowing out the old president (remember, it was his uncle) throughnbrute power, and who has never left office since then, a “president.”nDoesn’t he sound more like a “dictator”?

n

n
n

n

nWell,nObiang’s uncle was really brutal. He was a REALLY bad leader. So mostnpeople would consider it a good thing that he was removed fromnoffice. And a few years after the overthrow, there was an election, nand Obiang was elected to a seven-year term as president.

n

n
n

n

nSincenthen he has won re-election four more times. n

n

n
n

n

nBUT…Sometimesnthere was nobody running against Obiang, and other elections werenmarred by claims of fraud and intimidation by internationalnobservers.

n

n
n

n

nAndnalthough Obiang was at first considered more humane than his uncle, nsome people claim that he is becoming more and more brutal.nEquatorial Guinea is considered one of the most corrupt andnundemocratic nations in world. n

n

n
n

n

nAndnthat’s saying something!

n

n
n

n

nOfncourse, there are wonderful things about the nation as well…
