n

nInthink it’s nice to space out holidays and celebrations, don’t you?nLike, it’s a bit of a problem to have a family birthday on Decembern23, if you celebrate Christmas, because that particular birthday cannget sort of swallowed up in the Christmas bustle.

n

n

n

nButnthe island nation of the Seychelles have three important patrioticnholidays in June:

n

    n

  • nJunen 5 – Liberation Day

    n

  • n

  • nJunen 18 – National Day

    n

  • n

  • nJunen 29 – Independence Day

nWow!nn

n

n

n

nTodayncelebrates the anniversary of this date in 1977, when the country wasn“liberated” from the government installed by Great Britain thenyear before.

n

n

n

nAndnwhat we mean by “liberated” was a coupnd’etat.nThere were two legal leaders in the country, the President and anPrime Minister. The President left the nation to visit the U.K., andnthe Prime Minister just swooped in and took over. And then he justnran the country as a one-party communist state for 17 years!

n

n

n

nButnmany people in Seychelles are happy that the coup occurred; they arensure that it saved their lovely island nation from continuednexploitation.

n

n

n

nAllnof this just goes to show you that one guy’s illegal action isnanother guy’s heroic deed.

nShensells sea shells…

n

n

n

nThenname Seychellesnseems to me to be a perfect name for a nation made up of 115 islands, nbecause it is pronounced a lot like “sea shell” (in French, “seanshells” in English). Still, all of those islands don’t add up to anlot of land – less land than the one island of Guam, a U.S.nTerritory. And Seychelles is the smallest nation in Africa by way ofnpopulation.

n

n

n

nThenSeychelles was uninhabited throughout most of recorded history.nApparently, although we can assume that plenty of seafarers spottednand maybe landed on the larger islands, the first recorded landingnwas in 1609, by an English East India Company ship.

n

n

n

nStill, nthey remained uninhabited for another century and a half. Finally, nthe French began to take control of the islands – which means thatnsome French sea captain laid down a “Stone of Possession,” andnthen of course the British stepped up and said, basically, “nonfair, no fair!” n

n

n

n

nMostnpeople who now live in the Seychelles are creole – a mix of EastnAfrican and Malagasy, Indian, Chinese, French, and British.
