nHere’sna great plan:
n
n
n
nInvadena neighbor’s far-off colony. Grab the colony for yourself. Assure allnthe people living in the colony that you will be a better master thanntheir old master, because you will guarantee certain rights tonall…
Naturally, you will be welcomed by the people with opennarms. An all-new and improved master, right? What’s not tonlike?
Umm…plenty!

nIn 1806 and 1807, British forcesnmade several attempts to conquer the Rio de la Plata region ofnSouth America – an area now split between the nations of Uruguaynand Argentina. They apparently wanted the region for tradenopportunities – plus the Brits were in the middle of yet anothernwar with Spain elsewhere in the world – so they judged that Spanishntroops were too busy elsewhere, and they seized control of BuenosnAires.
n
n
n
n
n
nHowever, nthe local forces were not prone to accepting new masters. Theynregrouped, planned, and eventually (after 46 days) forced the Britishnout of their nation. n
n
n
n
n
n
nInsuppose some of them thought, “Better the devil we know than thendevil we don’t know.” Or, “We will have OUR masters or no mastersnat all.”
n

n
n
n
nProbablynthat latter thought. It seems that Spain was so busy fightingnelsewhere, it could do little to help the local forces against thenBritish troops. Because the local forces succeeded, the people ofnBuenos Aires and elsewhere in the Spanish colonies decided that theyncould and should be an independent nation. Soon independence fevernswept the region, and the locals kicked out the Spanish masters, too!

nCheckn out Buenos Aires in this fun, dance-y, happy video.n Does it look like just any other modern city in the world, with an diversity of people? It’s got a lot of pretty buildings, that’s forn sure. Maybe that’s why it’s called “the Paris of South America.”
