nTodaynthe Malawian people celebrate the anniversary of the 1993 end of ancorrupt totalitarian regime that had ruled their nation for almost 30nyears.

n

n
n

n

nSo…whatndoes “corrupt totalitarian regime” mean? n

n

n
n

n

n“Corrupt”nmeans that, instead of the people in power following the rule of law, nand governing for the betterment of the entire nation, they didnthings through bribery and other dishonest methods, and governed forntheir own gain.

n

n
n

n

nTotalitarian”nmeans that the government had total control over society; people hadnfew or no freedoms.

n

n
n

n

nAndna “regime” is another word for a government, but it is almostnalways used for a government that is rigid and repressive.

n

n
n

n

nSoundsnbad, right? Since 1993, the government has been a lot better, withndemocratic elections—but Malawi is still a very poor country. It isnconsidered one of the least-developed nations in the world.

n

n
n

n

nHerenare a few of the nicer things about Malawi:

n

n
n

n

    n

  • nAboutn a third of the small nation is taken up by Lake Malawi. This lake isn about 360 miles long and 52 miles wide. (Can you guess why it’sncalled “the calendar lake”?)

    n

  • nLaken Malawi is a great place to snorkel or dive. The water is clear, andn there are thousands of species of colorful cichlids.

    n

  • n

n

    n

  • nAtn Liwonde National Park, you can see elephants, hippos, crocodiles,n loads of birds, antelope, and maybe even rhinos, lions, leopards, orn jackals. One person reported seeing 266 different bird species inn just two days and nights. I’m not talking about 266 individual birdsn – I’m talking about 266 different kinds of birds (and entiren flocks of some species!).

    n

  • nMulanjen Mountain has little huts at the end of each hiking route; hikers whon join the Mountain Club can use the cooking facilities stored in then hut and burn the cedar wood in the huts’ fireplaces.

    n

  • n

n

n

    n

  • nLikoman Island is in Lake Malawi. It is very close to the shore of anothern nation – Mozambique – and it is surrounded by Mozambiquen territorial waters – but it is still a part of the nation ofn Malawi.

    n

  • n

n

n
n

n

nThenland is pretty much unspoiled, even though a lot of people live therenand one of the largest churches in Africa can be found there. Therenare no paved roads, few motor vehicles and telephones. It’s supposednto be very peaceful!
