nInnthe 1800s there were lots of people living in cities, and lots ofnthose people had carriages of various types and sizes drawn bynhorses. I sometimes try to imagine what busy city streets would’venbeen like back then!

nTherenwould have been a lot of horse poop, I bet!
n
n
n
nWhennthe auto-mobile – named because it could propel itself and didn’tnhave to be pulled by a horse – was first invented, there werenseveral types of engines. One of the biggies was the steam engine, nand of course there was also the internal-compulsion engine run byngasoline.
n
n
n
nToday’snbirthday twins designed, manufactured, and sold steam-engine autos.nBecause their names were Edgar and Freelan Stanley, their cars werencalled Stanley Steamers.
n
n
n
nThenStanley brothers produced their first car in 1897, and in the nextnfew years they were the leading manufacturer of cars in the U.S. Herenyou see Freelan Stanley and his wife at the top of Mount Washingtonnin New Hampshire, the highest peak in the northeastern U.S. – theyntook the two hours to drive up to the top as a publicity stunt forntheir auto business. n
n
n
n
nThenStanleys sold this original auto design to Locomobile and did ancomplete re-design for their own new business, the Stanley MotornCarriage Company. Their new design was twin cylinder engines gearednto the axle for the back wheels. With this design, they needed nontransmission, no clutch, no driveshaft….But they did need somengasoline, apparently, to run the vaporizing gasoline burnernunderneath the boilers.
n
n
n
nBynthe way, there were safety valves, and even modern engineers agreenthat the steam-boilers were safer than we might imagine. No Stanleynboiler ever exploded in use!
n
n
n
nThenStanley Steamer used to race cars with early internal-combustionnengines—and the steam-powered cars won! In fact, one world recordnstood for five years, despite the rapid development of better andnbetter cars that was occurring in the industry. n
n
n
n
nYounmay wonder why the internal-combustion engine ended up winning outnover the steam engine cars. In the decade of the 1910s, theninternal-combustion engines improved their efficiency and powerngreatly. Also, the electric starter was invented, and it madengasoline-powered cars much safer than they had been when they werenstarted by hand-cranking. Finally, Henry Ford’s innovative productionnstyle with the assembly line drastically reduced the cost of hisninternal-combustion cars.
