nGorgeousngrandmas aren’t JUST gorgeous…

Mynhusband and I just got back from a road trip, and one of theninteresting places we visited was Mammoth Site in Hot Springs, SouthnDakota. Thousands and thousands of years ago, a sinkhole formed andnfilled up with warm water; plants grew around this steep-sided poolneven in the winter, because of the warm water, and many different IcenAge animals were tempted by the warmth, food, and water—and fellninto the sinkhole trap. Of course, the animals who drowned werenburied in dirt and sediments; now scientists are excavating thisnancient sinkhole.
I know you are wondering what the heck allnof this has to do with grandmas. Well, I was so surprised that ournguide told us that, in this excavation, the largest fossil collectionnof mammoths in the world, EVERY ONE of the 61 skeletons was male.nApparently mammoths (like modern elephants) had matriarchal societiesnin which adult males left the herds to wander on their own or innbachelor herds. It is likely that it was the loner males who were thenbiggest risk takers, and were therefore the ones who ended up trappednin that sinkhole, but scientists believe that the older females innthe herd (yes, I’m talking about the grandmas) knew from experiencento avoid the sinkhole and were able to warn others in the herd tonstay away. So…not a single female (apparently) ended up entrapped.
